The Acai berry which has already gained its popularity as a health food that contains high amounts of antioxidants, and loads of vitamins and minerals. Published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, an Acai berry research was performed, wherein this fruit's extract was introduced to cancer cells. Results showed that the Acai berry extract triggered a self-destruct response among 86 percent of leukemia cells which were tested. But this was only a cell-culture model, and findings are yet to be validated by other researchers. There are also other fruits which have been studied to contain antioxidants and have shown to kill cancer cells in the human body in similar studies. These fruits include: mangoes, grapes, and guavas.
Acai berries are among the richest sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that are able to protect the body's cells from external and internal damage that are caused by unstable molecules which are called free radicals. Some free radicals are the known causes of cancer. Laboratory evidence done on cancer cell culture indicated that antioxidants can be able to slow down or prevent cancer development in the human body which is parallel to the results gathered from the Acai berry research. Antioxidants are able to neutralize free radicals which are molecules that contain incomplete electron shells.
Other benefits of this fruit are still undergoing clinical trials as well as other research related to the benefits of this fruit. Some benefits already published include: improved circulation, increase in energy, increased cell regeneration, as well as better eyesight.
